Book Reviews By Crofton Library Staff
March 6th, 2008 Categories: Crofton News

The Crofton Library staff is practicing what they preach – READING!
Not only that, they’re writing book reviews to help the rest of us make good choices when we visit the library. You will find this information at Crofton’s Read and Review, with the sub-title “A happy place where the staff of Crofton Library can post what they’re reading.”
There is just one problem: It’s not clear from the website if this is OUR Crofton Library.
After all, there are other Croftons in North America and they probably all have a library:
Crofton, Nebraska and Crofton, Kentucky in the United States and Crofton, British Columbia in Canada.
And, in England:
Crofton, Cumbria, in Thursby Parish; Crofton, Bromley, a neighbourhood in Orpington; Crofton, Hampshire, an area of Stubbington; Crofton near Wakefield in West Yorkshire; Crofton Pumping Station and Crofton Locks in the county of Wiltshire; and Crofton Park, southeast London.
I can only say for sure that “Crofton Library”, somewhere in the world, has a nice website featuring book reviews by their staff. Regardless of where Crofton’s Read and Review originates, this is a great resource for readers! (If this is “our” Crofton Library in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, please post a comment to this post and let us know so we can congratulate and thank you, when we stop into the library!)
Today’s post, Baseball Fever, actually reviews two books – George Vecsey’s Baseball: The History of America’s Favorite Game and Zach Hample’s Watching Baseball Smarter. Other recent reviews include Robin Hobb’s Renegade Magic and Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
I’m not a big reader, yet I bookmarked this site.
UPDATE 3/07/08: This IS “our” Crofton Library but, minutes after posting this, I received notice they consider this a “private” blog site. Now the Anne Arundel County public library in Crofton has blocked public access to their book reviews. What a shame for them and us! See the comments to this post for more information.
UPDATE 3/27/08: After my Letter to the Editor of The Annapolis Capitol and Crofton Crier appeared last week, this site went public again. Be sure to check out Crofton’s Read and Review… and enjoy!

Hi Margaret,
It is indeed Crofton, Maryland! I’m a part-time worker at the Crofton library (as well as other branches), but please feel free to stop in and visit anytime. And thanks for placing us on your blog!

Hello-
This is indeed the Crofton Library in Crofton, Maryland. Unfortunately we didn’t intend the blog to be more than a staff blog, it is not officially sanctioned by the library, and therefore it is now completely private.
As always, we welcome your questions for reading recommendations at our Information Desk anytime the library is open. We truly love connecting people with books that they would enjoy! Stop into the library!
Thanks for thinking of us…

Andy and Rachel - I went from being SOOOOO proud to learn it is, indeed, “our” Crofton library staff who developed this marvelous website, to being totally bummed that you blocked public access to it.
I actually talked about books at dinner tonight with my husband, an avid reader, for the first time in years after reading several of the reviews on your site, and sent a link to my son for one of the reviews so he can check out the book. You have the power to inspire other people in our community, as you did me. Instead, you’ve chosen to block access to your site. Very disappointing!
By the way, if anyone would like to contact the library about this, Rachel Myers email address is rmyers@aacpl.net.
