Ocean City Just Two Hours from Crofton

BeachOur relatively short drive to the Atlantic Ocean is one of the things we enjoy about living in the Crofton area.  From our driveway to Ocean City is a little over two hours on a weekday, an hour shorter than it is for family members who live in Montgomery County or Northern Virginia.

When my children were growing up, we often made day trips to Ocean City, arriving in mid morning and returning home in the evening.  The time of our return depended on what we found to do there on any given day or evening – and there’s no shortage of things to do!

Besides the obvious – playing in the surf and sand, cruising the boardwalk, and enjoying crabs at Phillips or Mug and Mallet – here are some things your family might enjoy at Ocean City during your visit, whether it’s a week-long vacation or a day trip:

Sundaes in the Park – Coming up this weekend and Sundays throughout August at Northside Park, 127th Street (bayside) from 6–8 p.m.  Music for the grownups and special entertainment for the kids.  (Small fee)

On the boardwalk - (C) MwodaMovies Under the Stars – Mondays and Fridays through August 14 at 27th Street on the beach, 7:30 p.m.  (free)

Beach Olympics – Tuesdays through August 11 from 6:30–8:30, on the beach at 27th Street.  (Relay games, tug of war, sand castle contests…  (free – children must be accompanied by adult)

Boogie on the Beach – Wednesdays in August from 8–9:30 on the beach at Division Street.  (free)

Bonfire Hour – Thursday nights from 9–10:00 p.m. on the beach at North Division Street – complete with story tellers, “leaping flames” and salty ocean breezes.  (free)

You’ll find public restroom facilities along the boardwalk, in the restaurants and even at most hotels, so don’t worry about finding a place to change from your beachware to boardwalk duds.

Assateague Island
If you’re not interested in getting sand and salt in your bathing suit,  however, you might want to visit Assateague Island, home of the world-famous wild ponies. It’s just nine miles from Ocean City, and you can spend your day checking out the nature trails, deer, birds and ponies with your kids.  (Be sure to take your camera.)  Or take them Crabbing any day and time at one of the many piers and fishing areas on the Bay.  (If you happen to go to Ocean City without small children in tow, you’ll find plenty of places for shopping!)

In the event you have so much fun you just don’t want to come home at the end of the day, chances are good you can find a room in Ocean City if it’s not a holiday weekend.  (But that two-hour drive is O-U-T if you make the trip on a weekend… it could be as long as 3–4 hours.)
