Wye Oak Seedlings Available for Crofton Residents
November 5th, 2009 Categories: Communities
In the two years since I posted Why Plant a Wye Oak in Crofton?, several people have contacted me to find out how they can get a seedling for themselves.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is again offering them for sale, and you can order online now. These two-year old seedlings, approximately 15 inches tall, were raised from acorns collected from the original Wye Oak. There is limited availability, and they will be shipped on a first-come basis (except to AZ, CA, FL, LA and OR, due to plant quarantines in those states).
You will receive your seedling in the Spring, along with a certificate showing the authenticity and history of the famous tree.
Click here to read more if you’re new to Maryland and unfamiliar with the history of the Wye Oak.

My Maryland Real Estate Blog post this week was targeted to real estate agents around the country, but you may want to know the answer to this question, as well:
What’s That Purple Thing Hanging in the Tree?
Have you ever heard that question, while showing property? If so, chances are good that you didn’t know the answer. That purple thing, my friends, is a trap for Emerald Ash Borer. Which leads to the next question… what’s an Emerald Ash Borer? (And tell me again, why do I care?). READ MORE
REMINDER:
Please drop off some items at my office to help fill holiday gift bags for deployed troops. Suggestions: toiletries, harmonica, yo-yo, soduko or crossword puzzle books, sunglasses, note paper, candy canes, etc. We’re stuffing the bags Monday afternoon, so there’s still time. Long & Foster is located near Rita’s Ice at 2191 Defense Highway, Crofton 21114. These gift bags will be sent to Operation Christmas Stocking for shipment overseas.
Thanks for reading Focus on Crofton! This is my way of attracting relocating homebuyers to our area while keeping current residents informed and earning their real estate business.

Night Hawk Golf Center is More Than a Driving Range
October 5th, 2009 Categories: Communities
You’ve probably seen Night Hawk Golf Center on Route 3, north of Crofton, Maryland, in Gambrills – but did you know it’s not “just” a golf driving range?
There’s also a miniature golf course, a par 3 course, batting cages, a pro shop and a staff of professionals to help you improve your game.
The driving range: You’ll find 36 lighted tees at Night Hawk Golf, including some under cover for those super-hot or drizzly days. They even have a sand bunker and a practice putting green. Prices range from $6.50 for a small bucket of balls (32) to $9.50 for a large bucket (96) – and they offer customers an “e-key” option for frequent users to get their balls.
Miniature golf: The miniature golf course is an activity you and your kids can enjoy all day for just $7.50 each. The 19–hole lighted course features plants, a lighthouse, waterfall, bridge and other architectural features to enhance the challenging slopes and turns. But miniature golf is not “just” for kids – it makes for a fun date night, too.
Par 3 course: Whether you’re a beginning or experienced golfer, who doesn’t need work on their short game? You can play this 9–hole lighted par-3 course for as little as $5, if you purchase 10 coupons, or $7.50/round on weekends.
Batting cages: Night Hawk Golf Center is not just for golfers, in spite of its name. You’ll also find nine batting cages for baseball or softball. With six different speeds, beginners and serious hitters alike will be challenged year round – not only during baseball season. The cost is $1 per token (15 pitches) or as low as $30 for 42 tokens.
It occurs to me there may be some Crofton area residents dropping their country club or golf course memberships in this economy, and Night Hawk Golf Center could be an affordable way to keep your game sharp ‘til things turn around. Night Hawk is located just north of Crofton in Gambrills, on the southbound lane of Route 3.
Why not stop reading now and head on over there?

Why Buy a Home in Bowie?
September 11th, 2009 Categories: Communities

Relocating families transferring to Maryland from other areas of the country to work in D.C. often choose Bowie over Crofton. In fact, moving from the Crofton area to Bowie has become a more frequent occurrence in recent months and years, for a number of reasons.
Here are the top five reasons for buying in Bowie:
1. Home prices – No doubt about it… homes tend to cost less in Bowie than a similar home in Crofton – by $100,000 or more. Faced with the choice of buying a condo in Crofton or a 4 bedroom detached home with garage and a big fenced yard in Bowie at the same price, its “no contest” in the minds of many home buyers.
2. Location – As traffic in the greater Crofton area worsened, commuting to D.C. and Northern Virginia from Bowie became more attractive for workers eager to spend more time with their families and less time in their cars.
3. Community – From youth sports and scouts for the kids to garden club and the Chamber of Commerce for grown-ups, Bowie is a place where people have a sense of “community.” And there’s no shortage of recreation facilities ranging from public parks to gyms to a golf course where Bowie children play golf without charge.
4. Schools – My clients tell me they’re very happy with Bowie schools. In fact, my grandchildren and their parents love Whitehall Elementary and they loved Kenilworth Elementary before that.
5. Shopping, Restaurants and Entertainment – Commercial development in Bowie over the past ten years has made this city a destination location for dining, entertainment, and shopping. Bowie residents enjoy the convenience of having so many choices within minutes of home.
If you’re renting, now might be a good time to take a look at Bowie for all of the above reasons. PLUS, the City of Bowie is collaborating with the Prince George’s County Council and the Maryland Department of Housing to offer the City Workforce and Bowie First programs. These will provide $1,000 in closing assistance to eligible home buyers, and the Maryland Mortgage Program will provide matching funds for a total of $2,000.

And watch for more posts about Bowie in the coming weeks and months, as my daughter-in-law, Christine Woda, joins me to form “Team Woda Real Estate” at Long & Foster. More on that later.
