Fabulous Floral Design Demonstration in Crofton

David Shover of A Blooming Basket in Millersville was the guest speaker for Crofton Village Garden Club last week. Even the “old pros” in garden club seemed to to be impressed and inspired by his presentation and fabulous creations.
The lesson I personally took away from the demonstration was simple: The next time I want a fabulous floral design, I’ll just ask for David at A Blooming Basket. I’ve never seen better floral designs. (Can you tell I’m just a tad bit jealous of all the winners who got to take one of the arrangments home?)
Each arrangement David created was fabulous - from the standing hand-held bouquet and colorful array of Spring flowers in a vase to the floral Margarita and everything in between.
A Blooming Basket does have monthly design classes taught by David, and that might be fun. But he really does have the “knack”, and I don’t think my imitations could even begin to measure up.
Here are some upcoming classes, in case you’re interested:
April 16 – The Flower Gift: Come learn how to create a novelty design of an arrangement in the shape of a present made of fresh cut flower and ribbons.
May 21 – Blooming Basket!: Create a basket filled with fresh flowers in an array of beautiful colors to brighten any room in your house.

Don’t Get Left Out In The Cold (Pun Intended)

One of the best things about living in Crofton, Maryland, is the easy access to recreational opportunities in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis. Well, this Saturday, it’s all about Annapolis!
As you know, it’s January, and most of you are probably planning to be at home in Crofton on Saturday, January 26th, curled up by the fire playing video games or watching some college basketball. But heck, why not bundle up and head out to Sandy Point State Park near the Bay Bridge for the Boardwalk-themed Winter Festival. Where else can you enjoy live pig-racing action, a 20-ton sand sculpture being crafted as you watch, and even an “Early Bear Plunge for those who love to Plunge but don’t love to wait.”
Yep, I’m talking about the 12th annual Polar Bear Plunge (Brrrrrrrrr) in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, to benefit Special Olympics Maryland. All it takes to be a part of the 2008 MSP Plunge experience is more guts than brains and $50 in pledges. Sponsors say this is ”the coolest event of the year!”
Of course, some folks aren’t satisfied just to participate - you know, the “Type A” personalities… the ones who never do anything halfway at work or play. These are The Few. The Proud. (and come Saturday, they are ) The Frozen. These are the Super Plungers, who brave both the elements and the Chesapeake Bay, taking one chilly dip after another for 24 hours straight. (Can you imagine? It makes me shiver just to think about one dip!)
The 12th Annual Polar Bear Plunge (Brrrrrrrrr), just a half hour from Crofton, is sponsored by the Maryland State Police (MSP), Comcast, WBAL, The Baltimore Sun, FedEx, Merritt Athletic Clubs, Frank Gumpert Printing, Grauls, CVS Pharmacy, and a long list of other local sponsors that goes on and on.
If you plan to watch (or Plunge), and it gets too cold, you can always retreat to the heated tent that will house (drum roll, please) Bunky’s Beach Party. That’s where you’ll find live music, a variety of vendors and crafters, the Astro Events Fun Zone just for kids, Plunge souvenirs, and refreshments. Admission is free for Plungers and spectators alike, so you can’t beat the price.
Please, don’t ask - I have NO plans of Plunging, although I might watch. However, I want to make sure my Crofton neighbors know all about this event, in case you’re looking for something to do with your family, this weekend! Parking will be limited, so Crofton residents should plan to park at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and take a shuttle bus. (Brrrrrrrr!)

Ouch! What’s Anne Arundel County Doing Now?

Anne Arundel County Health Department staff will be at the Westfield Annapolis Mall next week, on Tuesday January 22 and Thursday January 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to give you that flu shot you’ve been putting off.
They’ll have a booth in the mall’s new West Atrium, between Macy’s and Lord & Taylor. In fact, they’re making it so easy for us, we no longer have any excuse for procrastinating!
And who wouldn’t love an excuse to visit the new addition to Annapolis Mall, just 15 minutes from Crofton? If you haven’t yet shopped at the new Pottery Barn, or eaten at the new McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant, you can do that while you’re there!
But I digress… Let me get back to the topic du jour:
Flu shots are recommended by The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for anyone who wants to prevent the flu, especially people over 50, individuals with chronic medical conditions, young children, pregnant women, health care personnel and child care providers. That’s many of the people I know!

Crofton to Florida Snowbird Express

Who wants to move to Florida?
That’s a question I’m asking Crofton Maryland residents throughout this month and next.
Many Crofton residents arrived 20 or 30 years ago for government or consulting careers in Washington, D.C. or Baltimore. Now they’re either retired or on the brink of retirement, with secure financial futures and lots of home equity.
Spending the cold winter months in Florida is a realistic option for them - in fact, moving to Florida altogether is on the minds of some.
That’s why I have declared (drum roll please)…
F is for FLORIDA in FEBRUARY!
With the help of Katerina Gasset and Cyndee Haydon who are providing information about Wellington and Clearwater, I’m putting on a program for Crofton residents on February 7 at 7 pm. I couldn’t resist setting a snow date of February 12, just to emphasize the potential for snow in February. In fact, with a little luck, maybe we’ll have a snow storm about a week earlier so potential snowbirds will be suffering from snow-shovel fatigue. That should provide some motivation! (And a great opportunity for me to pass out fliers personally to retirees who are outside shoveling sidewalks and driveways.)
One of my favorite lenders will be there to tell people how they can use equity from their current home as a down payment and what it will take to qualify for financing on a second home. An accountant will be there to answer questions about any tax implications of a second home or down-sizing to a retirement community in Florida. And, of course, I’ll be prepared with information about selling their Crofton home in this buyer’s market.
I’m a little nervous… if no one comes, it won’t be the first time I’ve ever produced a “bomb” - but I believe potential Florida home buyers and Crofton home sellers are out there. You may have seen my quarter-page ad in the January and February issues of Suburban Scene Magazine, with distribution to 22,000 homes and businesses, and I’m advertising at the end of each Focus On Crofton blog post. Additionally, I have fliers and mailings ready for distribution to targeted neighborhoods the last week of January.
