Maryland Day 2010 - Don’t Miss It!

In addition to the Spring Craft Fair in Crofton tomorrow, you’ll want to attend Maryland Day 2010 at the University of Maryland with your family.  There truly is something for everyone!

Check out the schedule of events at the University of Maryland and, with a little planning, maybe you can fit in both the Spring Craft Fair and Maryland Day.  Here are some highlights and links from their website… be sure to click through to learn more.

Maryland DayAg Day Avenue – “Explore this neighborhood to learn why the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is not just about farming.”

Arts Alley – “This is the place to explore your artistic talents and enjoy a showcase of performances from our students and faculty.”

Biz & Society Hill – “This neighborhood features exciting events for all ages in architecture, business, journalism, public affairs and social sciences.”

Global Village – “Come see international cooking demonstrations and dance to a different beat while you learn about our international community and partnerships.”

Science & Tech Way – “Get ready to learn the coolest stuff. Come see where physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, mathematics and more collide.”

Sports & Rec Row – “Interested in trying a new sport or meeting some of the university’s coaches and student-athletes? Head over to this neighborhood.”

Terp Town Center – “Located in the center of campus, come here to learn about our schools and colleges, catch live performances under the Big Top and find a bite to eat…”

Surely there will be something happening on campus at the University of Maryland tomorrow that will interest you and others in your family!  If it should happen to rain, some events won’t be affected because they’re being held inside.

By the way, the above photo was taken at Maryland Day 2007 when this little girl was writing her own “Honor Code” to pledge academic integrity.  Your kids will learn all kinds of things at Maryland Day!

Don’t miss it, because there won’t be another Maryland Day until Spring 2011.

Crofton Craft Fair Is Saturday, April 24

Fun Banner3

The semi-annual Craft Fair sponsored by Crofton Town Club will be held this Saturday at the Crofton Country Club.  This event has been a spring tradition for the community for many years, and residents look forward to the opportunity to see thousands of hand-made items presented by local and regional crafters.

Crofton Spring Craft Fair.07The timing couldn’t be better, with Mother’s Day just around the corner and one-of-a-kind hand-made gifts items available to purchase.  100% of the proceeds will be donated to local charities, so “kill two birds with one stone” – contribute to your community while having a fun day.

While you’re there, if you happen to notice the aroma of barbecue chicken, follow your nose across the street to the north parking lot at the Village Green.  It’s likely you’ll find boy scouts and their parents cooking thousands of chicken pieces over an open fire and boxing them for you to take home.  I haven’t heard or seen any confirmation they’ll be doing this fundraiser again, but I can’t imagine they would discontinue it.

Crofton Town ClubBe sure to click through on this link to the Crofton Town Club to learn more about the organization and their activities.  The group started out as the Crofton Newcomers, and it’s still a great way for new Crofton area residents to meet their neighbors.

This organization… this event… Here are two more reasons why anyone relocating to the Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis area should choose Crofton MD for their next home.

All Good Things Must Come to an End…

Sooner or later, Crofton MD residents are going to answer their cell phones in the middle of the grocery store, on vacation, or while they’re out looking at homes – only to find out the caller is a campaigning politician, surveyor or telemarketer.  That’s because our cell phone numbers are available now in online public directories.

Woman - cell phone cropped

In a quick search, I found several including People Lookup, Find Cell Phone Numbers, Reverse Cell Phone Lookup, and others.  If you and I can go online to find these resources, you know the telemarketers are (or will be) doing so.  And yes, they will eat up our precious cell minutes even if the call goes to voice mail.

Our best hope for minimizing those calls to our cell phones is to register our numbers with the National Do Not Call List, either online or by telephone (888-382-1222)

We can register up to three numbers, including our cell phones.  But the system isn’t perfect – Even though our registration will be effective for five years, we can still expect to receive political campaign calls, solicitations from charities, and businesses masquerading sales calls as “surveys”.  But telemarketing sales calls will be a no-no, and that will help.

Whatever happened to the concept of carrying a phone for your own convenience, not for the convenience of others?  Apparently that’s one of those “good things” we’ll be talking about in the past tense.

Crofton Streets Better, But…

Sidewalks have disappeared in Crofton!  At least they have on my street.

Caterpillars at workCountless people worked long and hard to clear our sidewalks and those of our Crofton neighbors in the days following blizzards #1 and #2 last week.  Even as they did so, many streets remained unplowed.  One lane on Stratton Road, where I live, was plowed by a nameless good samaritan with a plow on the front of his pickup truck.  (Thank you!)

P2140033Late Saturday night – midnight, to be exact – two giant caterpillars could be seen and heard in front of our house moving snow off the streets and onto those previously shoveled sidewalks. (Photo on the top right)

County Executive Leopold and School Superintendent Maxwell called on all residents and business owners to “assist in clearing paths on sidewalks and to fire hydrants and storm drains in the aftermath of the double blow of winter storms over the past two weeks.”

Yeah, right!  After we did it once and your county equipment covered it up.  (Photo on the bottom right)  How on earth is anyone supposed to clear this much snow dumped on our previously cleared sidewalks?  The snow is piled higher than the top of our Jeep Grand Cherokee, which can’t even be seen from our living room window.

You gotta be kidding, Mr. Leopold and Mr. Maxwell!

Almost 3 Feet of Snow in Crofton MD

Crofton MD residents are shoveling out from 34 inches of snow, and the novelty is quickly wearing off.  There’s a reason we chose Maryland to live, and not Buffalo NY!

Our daughter Susan was a huge help! But it is what it is, and this will be a great neighborhood bonding experience… right?  You just keep telling yourself that!

Over 38 inches fell in nearby Elkridge, 26.5 inches at BWI Airport, 20 inches in DC, and “only” 13 inches in nearby Alexandria VA.  This will help put our 34 inches in perspective when a co-worker says “it wasn’t so bad!”  (‘Bet you won’t be hearing that from anyone living in Elkridge.)

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley warns that road conditions are likely to be worse today than they were on Saturday, with re-frozen ice that was melted by chemicals yesterday.  However, the Interstates and major roads are passable with shortened merge areas.

I don’t know about you, but I’m planning to stay home if at all possible!

If you must go out, be sure to check online for road problems so you can avoid them.  You’ll find color-coded markers indicating disabled vehicles, accidents, congestion and other impediments to travel when you click on Interactive Mapping on the Maryland Department of Transportation website.  Just zoom into the area where you plan to travel and click on the marker to see the nearest intersection.

Now let me put on my real estate agent hat and re-assure prospective home buyers that this is a record snowfall.  I’ve lived in Crofton MD since 1970 and this is a first.  In other words, don’t let this snowfall scare you away!  We have some years with no snow at all.
