Crofton Village Garden Club Meets Today
September 2nd, 2009 Categories: Organizations
The Crofton Village Garden Club meets today, after a two-month summer hiatus.
The club’s theme this year is “Together We Can Make a Difference” and they have several projects lined up to do just that:
You’re probably familiar with the club’s 40–year tradition of decorating the front gates of “Old” Crofton and the Crofton Village Green for the holidays, and you may have seen the garden they planted last Spring at the Crofton Village Green with proceeds of an earlier Crofton Home and Garden Tour.
But they do a lot of things the community doesn’t see:
-
Make holiday wreathes with decorative bows for donation to the Crofton Library, CCA Town Hall and Crofton Schools.
-
Create over 100 floral arrangements at our November meeting for wounded veterans at the VA Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility in Baltimore.
-
Collaborate with other garden clubs to decorate State Circle and Hammond Harwood House in Annapolis for the holidays.
-
Share their talents with residents of Crofton Convalescent Center by helping them make seasonal floral arrangements.
Helping local Girl Scouts earn the Native Plants Patch will be one of the club’s new projects this year. The other is promoting “Plant it Pink” – a partnership between National Garden Clubs, Inc. and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Watch for more information from Crofton Village Garden Club, including a Spring Fashion Show and High Tea at Crofton Country Club (open to the public), as they unfold throughout the year.
If you have an interest in gardening – as a beginner or master gardener or anywhere in between – there are two garden clubs in Crofton for you to join. Crofton Greenery Garden Club meets in the evening and Crofton Village Garden Club meets on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 9:30 a.m. For more information, contact me and I’ll pass along your contact information to the appropriate club president.

What Changes Are on the Horizon for Crofton Area?
July 13th, 2009 Categories: Organizations
A little birdie told me that Crofton… Wait. Stop!. Scrap the little birdie!
No need to rely on hearsay and gossip, when it comes to changes in the Crofton area. That’s because the Greater Crofton Council (GCC) is a lot more reliable source of what’s going on in this area than a little birdie or any other source of information, including local print media and blogs.
GCC has developed a reputation among politicians, developers, service providers and advocacy groups as the eyes, ears, and mouth for Crofton area residents, including those in Odenton, Gambrills, Davidsonville and other nearby neighborhoods. What do I mean by that? Very simply…
GCC takes the time to look at proposals and hear the perspective of presenters, and then they communicate the information to others throughout the area.
Just take a look at the agenda for tomorrow night’s meeting (June 14):
- Critical environmental issues in the local area, including the spread of ground water from two large sources. Guest panel includes Dick Lahn (Founder, String of Pearls Project), Dawn Thomas (Watershed Steward for Crofton and Patuxent River), Jennifer Bevan-Dangel (Deputy Director, 1000 Friends of Maryland), and Tim Berkoff (NASA research engineer and environmental activist).
- Crofton Regional Community Center Project – Senator Janet Greenip
- GDP testimony to the Anne Arundel County Council and the Waugh Chapel South development being built on the Gambrills fly ash pits.
- Recent changes in police-community communications.
- Preview of the August 2009 teen event and the September 8 community safety meeting co-hosted by the GCC and Anne Arundel County Police Department.
You’ll find photos and notes from the June 9 meeting of GCC on the Greater Crofton Council website, in addition to concept graphics about the impending Route 3 changes, and other issues affecting the quality of life for local residents. GCC meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Village Commons Community Center. That’s located in the Village at Waugh Chapel – Rt. 3 and Waugh Chapel Rd.
NOTE: Ask and you shall receive. If you provide announcements for your community organization, every effort will be made to publish them at Focus on Crofton in a timely manner.

Spotlight on Crofton First
March 23rd, 2009 Categories: Organizations
Promote Smart Growth is more than a slogan for Crofton First. It’s exactly what this three-year old community organization stands for and does.
Formed in April 2006 in response to threatened Wal-Mart development on undeveloped wetlands along Route 3, Crofton First is faced with a new challenge: the recently-issued MDE permit for the same property as a mixed-use development.
The future of this site will be discussed at the Crofton Library on March 26 at 7 p.m. during the next Crofton First meeting. Attorney Macy Nelson will provide an update and answer residents’ questions.
Additionally, Jennifer Bevan-Dangel of 1000 Friends of Maryland will review the Maryland Legislative Session with an emphasis on growth legislation.
As a long-time Crofton resident, I can say unequivocally that the difference between this and other communities is the residents and dedicated volunteers who have worked since Day One to make it a special place to live.
By taking on this challenge, Crofton First follows in the path of early local residents like Dave Espie who helped create the Special Taxing District and Police Department, Kathryn Callahan who led efforts to plant flowering trees along the Parkway, Marsha Perry who made it her mission to eliminate odors from a nearby treatment plant, Ed Dosek whose efforts led to the acquisition of property for Bell Branch Park, and many others.
That tradition of community involvement and activism seems to be alive and well in Crofton First.
Anyone who wants to get involved but cannot attend next Thursday’s meeting should email croftonfirst@gmail.com.
