SCHOOLS CLOSED ARUNDEL COUNTY
February 7th, 2010 Categories: Schools
Crofton kids will get no relief on Monday, Feb. 8, from helping their parents shovel out after the big weekend snow. Schools will be closed, and snow removal efforts will continue. (Maybe a little bit of fun, too, for everyone!)
Anne Arundel County school officials have designated Monday as “Code Red” – i.e., both schools and offices will be closed. (Don’t be surprised if it’s closed later in the week, as well, but they’re obviously holding out ‘til the very last minute to make that decision.)
For updates, visit the Anne Arundel County Schools website, or subscribe to SchoolsOut to receive school closing announcements via text on your cell phone.

Maryland Outshines Virginia on ACT Scores
August 26th, 2009 Categories: Schools
Maryland vs. Virginia. Both claim to have the best schools.
Yet we learned several weeks ago that Maryland Schools Rank #1 in the Nation, according to Newsweek and Education Week magazines, as well as #1 for Advanced Placement performance and participation. But that’s not all!
Now Maryland schools outshine Virginia schools in another category - ACT performance.

How do these results compare with other states? Well, those with the top three highest composite scores were Massachusetts (23.9), New Hampshire (23.5) and Connecticut (23.5).
Three states had 100% participation in the ACT tests: They were Colorado, Kentucky and Michigan. Wyoming (99%), Illinois (97%), Mississippi (93%) and Tennessee (92%) were close behind with strong participation in ACT testing.
Congratulations again to Nancy Grasmick, Maryland’s Superintendent of Schools and to all the teachers and administrators who continually challenge Maryland children and obtain outstanding results.
If you’re reading this because you’re trying to decide where in the D.C.-Baltimore area to live, why not choose a home in Maryland, where the school system repeatedly tops others in the metropolitan area.

Crofton Woods Elementary to Open One Day Later
August 19th, 2009 Categories: Schools
Crofton Woods Elementary will open on Tuesday, August 25, instead of Monday when other county schools open. Kindergarden students will begin classes on a staggered schedule starting Thursday, August 27, not Wednesday, when Kindergardeners at other schools begin. The school is one of eighteen throughout the county with delayed opening due to construction projects underway.

Yes, folks, it’s that time of year again, and lots of school news for the 2009–2010 school year is available now on the Anne Arundel County Public School website. Check it out for the school bus schedule (online for only 3 weeks) and frequently asked questions and eligibility guidelines for free/reduced price meals.
Students in grades 1–9 at other schools will head back on August 24, while high school students get one more day to enjoy summer before returning on August 25. Half-day Pre-K begins September 1. Teachers began their school year this week, joining new teachers whose orientation was August 10–12.
For most people without children in school, it means leaving 15 minutes earlier for work in the morning, due to extra traffic on the roads and delays caused by stopping for school buses and crossing guards. Don’t forget to adjust your schedule accordingly. The “easy” commuting days of summer are over!
REMINDER… Community Back to School Fair for families in Crofton, Gambrills and Odenton on Saturday, August 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at The Village of Waugh Chapel Community Center. The event is sponsored by Greater Crofton Chamber of Commerce, the Crofton Rotary Club and Suburban Scene. More information

Lady Terps Advance in NCAA Tournament
March 29th, 2009 Categories: Schools
Crofton’s location just 30 minutes from College Park makes it easy to be a college sports fan. We’ve been University of Maryland football season ticket holders for many years and became Lady Terps basketball fans after seeing them in the NCAA opening rounds at Comcast last season.
Last August, I bought my husband two season tickets for his birthday and this really turned out to be a gift of my time throughout the basketball season.
What a show those Lady Terps have put on for us! Seniors Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman played on the 2006 National Championship team and they seem determined to
bookend their careers with another win in 2009. Seeing them nail shots from any distance and any angle is always a thrill, but it’s downright electrifying when they seamlessly change directions, dribble the ball from one hand to the other and behind their back, and make (or receive) passes in a direction they aren’t even looking. Amazing!
Maryland’s 78–74 victory over Vanderbilt in the Sweet Sixteen on Saturday was a one-woman show with Marissa Coleman scoring 42 points – a personal and team record. Vanderbilt led (by as much as 18 points) for most of the game, until Marissa caught fire and carried the team to victory, clinching it with two free throws at 9.6 seconds to go in the game.
Marissa Coleman, Coach Brenda Frese, and Kristi Toliver,
as seen on the jumbotron during Senior Night ceremonies.
Sharpshooter Kristi Toliver got into early foul trouble in this game and scored “just” 15 points, but she was the player who carried Maryland in the opening round against Dartmouth, when Marissa’s game was cold – at one point having 23 points to the other team’s 23.
Yet others on the team always demonstrate great skills and heart, providing the assists and rebounds to set up Marissa’s and Kristi’s showmanship. I think we’ll continue to see exciting basketball from the Lady Terps, even after these seniors graduate.
Tonight’s “Elite Eight” game against Louisville will be televised on ESPN at 7 p.m. If that’s too early for you to sit down and watch T.V., why not Tivo or record it for later?
And may I suggest you get tickets for next year? They’re so cheap you won’t feel guilty if you miss a game or two – last year’s price was just $65 for a general admission season ticket, and we had no trouble finding great seats. There’s a reason Maryland sets the attendance record for Women’s Basketball – they’re really fun to watch, parking is easy (although the steps to Comcast are not for the faint-hearted – see the crowd leaving Sunday’s game in this photo), and your sweetie will appreciate the gift of your time.

Gambrills Area Teens Battle Two Opponents on the Court
February 15th, 2009 Categories: Schools
Arundel Wildcats Varsity boys basketball team is playing Northeast H.S. on the courts Tuesday, February 17, but that’s not all. They’re also taking on the battle against Cancer as part of a larger school effort to create awareness and fight the disease.
They’re asking fans to make a donation to the American Cancer Society at the door for the Senior Night game.- Arundel Wildcats Varsity girls wear new uniforms, with a splash of pink as a reminder of the fight against breast cancer.
- A mural is being created at the school to honor friends and family members of students who have been touched by cancer, funded by $1 student donations.
Arundel High School is located at 1001 Annapolis Road in Gambrills. Visit the school website for a complete schedules of games for all their sports and more information about the Wildcats’ athletic program.
